After 16 teams fight for 38 games, only Japan and Cuba left, and the winner will be the first championship for World Baseball Classic.

    Semifinal:
    Cuba 3, Dominican Republic 1

    CUBA - 000 000 300 -- 3
    DOMINICAN REP - 000 001 000 -- 1

Behind an offense of players known primarily only in their native land, Cuba stunned a Dominican Republic squad made up of some of the most famous players in the world, 3-1, in the first game of the semifinals at PETCO Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Cuban National team is accustomed to winning. After all, this club is 22-2 in international play, dating back to 2001. First, it beat Venezuela. Next was Puerto Rico. And now, the Dominican Republic — which arguably was its best win, ever. Cuba silenced a ferocious lineup in front of a sellout crowd of 41,268 and a nationally televised audience of millions, and did it on U.S. soil, a rarity in its rich baseball history.

    Japan 6, Korea 0

    JAPAN - 000 000 510 -- 6
    KOREA - 000 000 000 -- 0

Kosuke Fukudome came off the bench with one out in the seventh inning and poled a two-run pinch-hit homer into the right-field seats at PETCO Park off Kim, the beleaguered Byung-Hyun Kim. And suddenly, the Japanese are on their way to the World Baseball Classic finals and a matchup against Cuba for the inaugural championship on Monday at 9 p.m. ET.

After holding the opposition to eight runs in its first 60 innings during the World Baseball Classic, Korea succumbed to a five-run barrage in the seventh inning and dropped a rain-interrupted 6-0 decision to Japan before 42,639 at PETCO Park. The loss ended Korea’s six-game winning streak, and kept it from playing Cuba in Monday night’s championship game.

Cuba maintain their tradition, to become the second team in final four, and Korea still unbeaten, defeat Japan twice in 10 days to be the third team advanced into semifinal. As for USA, they still got a chance to play another games by winning Mexico tomorrow.

    Pool 1:
    Korea 2, Japan 1

    KOREA - 000 000 020 -- 2
    JAPAN - 000 000 001 -- 1

Before Wednesday night’s high-stakes matchup between Korea and Japan in Round 2 of the World Baseball Classic, a techno version of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” blared through the speakers. After getting a clutch two-run double in the eighth inning from Jong Beom Lee and an equally clutch relief performance from righty Seung Hwan Oh on the way to a 2-1 victory in a beautifully pitched game Wednesday night at Angel Stadium, Korea’s unbeaten (6-0) squad celebrated as if it had indeed moved on to a glorious baseball afterlife.

Go Mexico! That is the only rallying cry remaining for Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic after it dropped to Korea in a classic game played before 39,679 at Angel Stadium. It comes down to this for manager Sadaharu Oh’s team: Root, root, root for Mexico. If the United States wins the final quarterfinal game here, it’s all over for Japan, and the team would return home wondering what might have happened if the offense had a little more punch in the middle of its lineup.

    Pool 2:
    Cuba 4, Puerto Rico 3

    CUBA - 100 300 000 -- 4
    PUERTO RICO - 100 000 200 -- 3

Garbed in its traditional uniform — red pants and predominately red jersey — for the first time in World Baseball Classic play, Cuba went out of its way to save its best for last. Cuba manager Higinio Velez was not around to see it all, but he probably would have liked what his red machine did Wednesday night. In fact, he would have loved it.

Puerto Rico may have been bounced from the inaugural World Baseball Classic on Wednesday, but it certainly went down swinging. Bernie Williams hit a leadoff home run, but one of Puerto Rico’s other superstars, Ivan Rodriguez, was thrown out at home plate trying to score the tying run in an electrifying 4-3 loss to Cuba, which advanced to the tournament’s semifinals in San Diego.

By defeated the Venezuela, Dominican Republic become the first team in Final Four of World Baseball Classic, and after winning against Mexico, Japan still have hope to advance.

    Pool 1:
    Japan 6, Mexico 1

    JAPAN - 000 410 001 -- 6
    MEXICO - 000 000 010 -- 1

It probably was more important than ever for Japan to get off to a good start in its World Baseball Classic game against Mexico. An early toe-stubbing could have further demoralized a team that already spent too many hours down in the dumps following a disputed loss to Team USA on Sunday. Well, a splendid effort by right-handed starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, and a four-run fourth inning, provided just the tonic Japan needed to climb back into Classic semifinals picture as it notched a 6-1 victory before 16,591 at Angel Stadium.

Mexico’s hopes of advancing to the semifinals of the inaugural World Baseball Classic were left hanging by the thinnest of threads at Angel Stadium with a loss to Japan. Team Mexico, 0-2 in pool play here, needs Korea (2-0) to beat Japan (1-1) on Wednesday. Then comes the hard part. Mexico would have to defeat the United States, 1-0, in 14 innings on Thursday to advance via the tiebreaker based on total runs allowed divided by innings played on defense.

    Pool 2:
    Dominican Republic 2, Venezuela 1

    VENEZUELA - 000 001 000 -- 1
    DOMINICAN REP - 100 000 10x -- 2

Kelvim Escobar peered in at Albert Pujols in the bottom of the seventh inning at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, and knew that Venezuela’s fate in this World Baseball Classic was likely riding on this one exchange with perhaps the finest right-handed hitter in the world. The bases were loaded, and there were two outs in a 1-1 game.

As he unleashed a fastball on the outer half of the plate, Escobar was prepared for just about anything that came his way. Except, that is, for the ball slipping off the glove of catcher Ramon Hernandez for a costly passed ball that snapped the tie, and ultimately led to the most crushing of defeats to the Dominican Republic.

In any language, the noisy celebration and party for La Republicana Dominicana is on, and its headed to Southern California. In front of a boisterous crowd of headband-wearing, flag-waving and country-loving baseball aficionados from all over the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic edged Venezuela, 2-1, to become the first team to qualify for the World Baseball Classic semifinals in San Diego.

If you did not know how USA won, remember, it’s Bob Davidson, not Alex Rodriguez to let USA won.

    Pool 1:
    United States 4, Japan 3

    JAPAN - 120 000 000 -- 3
    USA - 010 002 001 -- 4
Two outs when winning run scored.

There is no crying in baseball, not even in the World Baseball Classic, but Team Japan could have a shed a tear or two Sunday afternoon and no one would question its sorrow. A run Japan apparently scored in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead over Team USA was nullified, and the run Alex Rodriguez drove in with two outs in the bottom of the ninth counted, giving the home country a 4-3 victory before 32,896 flag-waving fans at Angel Stadium.

It was a game in March that had it all. Big leads. Blown leads. A disputed call. And an Alex Rodriguez base hit up the middle with the bases loaded in the bottom of ninth that saved Team USA from panic in the second round of the World Baseball Classic. The net result was a victory over the Japanese that left them shaking their collective heads as they walked off the field late Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium.

    Korea 2, Mexico 1

    MEXICO - 001 000 000 -- 1
    KOREA - 200 000 00x -- 2

Seung Yeop Lee’s bat is made of dynamite, so his swing doesn’t have to be. The explosive Korean teed off on Mexico’s Rodrigo Lopez in the bottom of the first inning, sending Korea to a 2-1 win over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic in front of 42,979 at Angel Stadium on Sunday night.

One bad pitch during one long inning led to some long faces in Team Mexico’s dugout, but Rodrigo Lopez managed a smile or two nonetheless. Lopez, who gave up a two-run homer to Seung Yeop Lee in the first inning of Mexico’s loss to Korea, said “I’d say our pitching was excellent.” But Korea’s pitchers were even better, holding Team Mexico, which scored 19 runs while winning its previous two games, to five hits without a walk while striking out nine in a tense, tidy affair.

    Pool 2:
    Cuba 7, Venezuela 2

    CUBA - 010 005 100 -- 7
    VENEZUELA - 000 000 200 -- 2

In a development that could have made only Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and Cuba’s hitters happy, Venezuela manager Luis Sojo made the tough decision of taking out ace Johan Santana after five innings and 67 pitches of mastery in Sunday’s World Baseball Classic contest at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. Sojo went to his bullpen, and the result was decidedly bad for Venezuela in what wound up as a 7-2 loss to Cuba.

Two days removed from the nation’s most embarrassing loss in 23 years, Cuba struck back with a bang. A pair of bangs, in fact. Frederich Cepeda and Ariel Pestano hit back-to-back home runs and Cuba rode a five-run sixth inning to a win over Venezuela. Cuba finished with twice as many hits as a Venezuelan lineup that consisted entirely of players from the American Major Leagues. Right-handers Yadel Marti and Pedro Lazo were the pitching heroes as Cuba asserted its place in the baseball world in front of 13,697 fans.

Puerto Rico 7, Dominican Republic 1

    PUERTO RICO - 000 103 300 -- 7
    DOMINICAN REP - 010 000 000 -- 1

The pitchers’ duel between the Dominican Republic’s Bartolo Colon and Puerto Rico’s Javier Vazquez lived up to expectations Sunday night. Both right-handers shined for five innings, shutting down opposing hitters and putting on a good show for the crowd. It’s what happened and what didn’t happen upon their departure that proved to be the difference. Puerto Rico rallied, the Dominican Republic fell apart, and in the end, it was the hometown team to remain unbeaten in four tournament games.

It was a very good day for underdogs on the Isle of Enchantment. Hours after Cuba scored a win over the favored Venezuelans, Jose Cruz Jr. drove in three runs and Carlos Beltran scored three more, as Puerto Rico eased past the Dominican Republic, 7-1, in front of 19,692 raucous fans at sold-out Hiram Bithorn Stadium.

World Baseball Classic surprise begin, although Taiwan got huge win over China, but Korea upset Japan by Seung Yeop Lee’s two run homer.

For China, 18-2 loss to Japan in the Classic opener was a bummer. The 10-1 setback to Korea in the second game was nothing to write home about, either. And Sunday’s 12-3 loss to rival Chinese Taipei before 4,577 put the finishing touches on Team China’s rough week in Tokyo.

For Taiwan, Winless heading into the Classic’s final day, Yung Chi Chen (Seattle Mariners Prospect) of Chinese Taipei has monster day to a 12-3 win over the rival China, saving face and keeping Asian baseball’s pecking order somewhat intact.

Although Japan speedster Munenori Kawasaki laid down a bunt and couldn’t beat the throw to first, and Ichiro Suzuki popped out unceremoniously for the final out, ending a series of ineptitude for the Seattle Mariners star, as Japan fell, 3-2, to Korea in the World Baseball Classic.

After three wins, Korea will play two exhibition games in Arizona — Wednesday night against the Kansas City Royals in Surprise and Friday night against the San Diego Padres in Peoria. A date with the second seed from Pool B (United States, Canada, Mexico or South Africa) awaits Korea in Anaheim on Sunday, followed by two other games — including a rematch against Japan.

    Day 3 result:

As expect, China and Taiwan all lost today, but we never image that Taiwan will be called game with eight pitcher used.

Japan start fire in first inning with two outs, right-handed starter Chu-Chien Hsu served up a three-run home run to Hitoshi Tamura, starting Chinese Taipei towards a 14-3 loss before 31,047. The game was stopped after seven innings because of the 10-run “mercy” rule.

China finally skipped the meltdown, but Korean Seung-Yeop Lee’s two-home run, five-RBI performance was more than enough to send China to a to a 10-1 loss in World Baseball Classic action Saturday in front of 3,925 fans at Tokyo Dome.

Due to both Korea and Japan has two wins, they will both advance to the second round of the World Baseball Classic in Anaheim Stadium on March 12-16.

Asia’s top seed will be determined on March 5th when Japan plays Korea in the Pool A finale. The winner goes to the United States as the loser and plays the Pool B winner at 1 p.m. (PT) on March 12th at Angel Stadium while the winner plays the Pool B runnerup at 8 p.m. (PT) on the same day.

    Day 2 result:
    Korea 10, China 1

    CHINA - 000 000 010 -- 1

Mark Buehrle - '05 World Series Game 2 / Action
Chicago White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle and second baseman Tadahito Iguchi, two valuable players of the Sox’s 2005 World Series title, announced they have withdrawn from their participation in the first World Baseball Classic this March.

Buehrle who won 16 games, lost 8 games, ERA 3.12, 149 Strikeout in 2005, has pitched 221 innings or more in each of the last five seasons. He already had relayed his decision to Buck Martinez, the manager for the United States.

Buehrle’s first public comments regarding this matter came during an interview on “White Sox Weekly,” a Saturday staple on WSCR-AM 670, the new flagship station for the White Sox. “I turned down to play in the World Baseball Classic,” Buehrle told host Chris Rongey on Saturday morning. “The main reason is that I want to be ready for the season, and I don’t want to cheat our fans and my teammates.”

“With me going into the Classic, I’m taking a chance of getting hurt. It’s such an honor to even be asked to go play there, and that’s why I really thought about it a lot. But I talked to Buck Martinez the other day, and told him I’m going to have to turn it down this year.”

His decision alleviates concerns about their rotation. The Sox have 22-year-old Brandon McCarthy who is a potential sixth starter and could be into the 5th one if they choice to trade Jose Contreras for prospects or if any starter gets hurt.

Citing his position on the major league club, wants to focus on his play as he enters his second year in the majors, Iguchi has withdrawn from the Japanese squad.

According to Kyodo News agency, “Unfortunately, I’ve decided to withdraw from the squad. I informed manager Sadaharu Oh of my decision by fax yesterday,” Iguchi said while training in Japan’s southernmost island of Okinawa. “This is the second year of my two-year contract with the White Sox. The team expects more from me than in the first year, so I would have to be in spring training.”

Iguchi’s reported withdrawal follows New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui’s decision in late December not to join Japan’s squad at the 16-nation games, it leaves Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and Texas Rangers reliever Akinori Otsuka are are the only two Major Leaguers on Japan’s roster.

Iguchi’s decision not to play for his native Japan allows manager Ozzie Guillen to experiment with his revamped offense. Iguchi will be evaluated as a sixth- or seventh-place hitter to take advantage of his run-producing capabilities.

Iguchi performed so well in the second spot in 2005 that Guillen often referred to Iguchi as his most valuable player. But Iguchi batted in the middle of the order during most of his eight seasons in the Japanese Pacific League.

The announcements leave the White Sox with only two players–starting pitchers Freddy Garcia (Venezuela) and Javier Vazquez (Puerto Rico)–committed to participate in the WBC. Both players will miss at least three weeks of spring training.

Vazquez did not seem overly concerned with the earlier preparation. “Obviously, I have to be ready earlier than I usually would,” said Vazquez, who already was throwing off of a mound before the end of 2005. “It’s going to accelerate what I usually do, but I don’t think it will affect me.”

Hideki Matsui, Ichiro Suzuki - ©Photofile
New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui has decided not to join Japan’s World Baseball Classic team next March.

“I have decided not to join up with the national squad. I know that it would be ideal to play for both club and country and I understand that (Japan manager) Sadaharu Oh and the fans were hoping I would do that,” Matsui said. “But the reason I decided to go to the United States was to try and become a world champion with the Yankees and I fear that chasing two goals might get in the way of that dream.”

“He wrote saying how important it was to him to try and become a world champion at the Yankees next season,” Oh expressed disappointment. “It’s disappointing but I can understand. It’s up to him to decide. It was not a surprise that he refused since he had been hesitating for such a long time.”

Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and Chicago White Sox infielder Tadahito Iguchi have already decided to join Japanese Team at the WBC.

Matsui, 31, batted a career-best .305 with 23 homers and a career-high 116 RBI in 2005; he also set career-highs in hits (192) and doubles (45). He has never missed a game since entering the majors in 2003. For his first three years in the MLB, he has .297 batting average, 70 homers and 330 RBI.

One stats might influence the decision of Matsui, he only batted .255 (69-for-271) with six home runs and 44 RBIs in April for the pass three season with Yankees.

He just signed a four-year, 52 million contract with Yankees last month, which makes him to become the highest-paid Japanese player in the major leagues, surpassing Ichiro (signed four-year, 44 million-dollar deal in 2003).

Matsui is the second high profile Yankee players decide not to play the WBC in two weeks, joining third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Other Yankees fielders, Derek Jeter (United States), Johnny Damon (United States), Robinson Cano (Dominican Republic) and Bernie Williams (Puerto Rico) have agreed to play.

Catcher Jorge Posada is blocked by Yankees because his age, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina also believed to be restricted, both of them did not list as participating.

Pitcher Chien-Ming Wang also wants to play, and has been working out with the Taiwan team this offseason, according to his agent, Alan Chang. But the Yankees have told baseball officials they have reservations about Wang taking part because of the rotator cuff tear he suffered last July.

Chang said Wang plans to return to the United States next month to continue his workouts in Arizona, where he shares the same trainer as Randy Johnson. “When he reports to Yankees spring training in February, the Yankees medical and training staff will evaluate him and make the appropriate recommendation at that time,” Chang added.

Hideki Matsui - 2003 World Series, Game 2, Home Run
Japan’s World Baseball Classic Team will play exhibition games against Chiba Lotte Marines and the Yomiuri Giants, and Hideki Matsui still undecided if he will join or not.

Japan, who leads by Sadaharu Oh, will play against a team made up of non-WBC members from the 12 clubs in Nippon Professional baseball at Yahoo Dome in Fukuoka on Feb. 24 and 25. Then Japan will play with Marines on Feb 27 at Yahoo Dome and Giants at Tokyo Dome on March 1.

Japan will play against China on March 3th, Taiwan on March 4th and Korea on March 5th at Tokyo Dome. The top two teams of Pool A will advance to the second round to be played in the Angel Stadium begin on March 12.

Japan already announced the 29-man roster for inaugural World Baseball Classic, however, the remains one roster spot still pending. New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui is still undecided on whether he will join or not.

“The situation hasn’t changed at all. I’m still thinking it over. But I would like to let manager Sadaharu Oh know what I’ll do as soon as he comes back from Taiwan,” Matsui said during a visit to Tochigi Prefecture. Oh is visiting Taiwan and is scheduled to return to Japan on Saturday.
